Zaion(在音)’s Nomadic Landscapes

Zaion is a great friend, who released his debut album in 2009.  I was lucky enough to meet him in Tokyo when I was living there when we both played the same venue (Milk in Ebisu) in 2005.  Zaion in 13cm and me in ettouchi.  We became mates in Japan and then he moved to San Francisco.  We kept in contact and eventually I too moved to San Francisco and we went to a lot of live shows together.

When he wrote his debut album, he asked me to play on a song and I was so excited to be a part of it.  Nomadic Landscapes was the first song on the album and I played some guitars in the background.

It has always been a special song for me so I decided a long time ago to make a video for it.  The animation is driven by expressions that are connected to the music.  The concept was that music is the landscape, always changing and creating hills and ridges to get lost in. If you look from another angle, it is a whole new landscape.  The images are formed by the music, and the landscapes move and change as the music changes.

I was so happy to have been able to have been a part of this recording and cant wait for Zaion’s next release.

If you get a chance, pick up a copy of Zaion’s Nomadic Journals… it is a treat of an album.

U-40 Japanese Architects
under40japanesearchitects.com

Beautiful documentary about a few Japanese Architects under 40.  One of the things I loved about living in Japan was finding little houses or buildings that were so beautiful, but just out of place.  In the middle of a suburban area you would find some amazing architectural buildings just living next to a normal house.  This documentary shows a few.

PiKA PiKA 2011

Pika Pika have done it again, taking light painting to the next level by using the Sun.

This beautiful piece describes their use of clean energy in their latest piece and how it relates to the 2011 disaster in Japan.  In japan there is lot of debate about energy and this is the Pika Pika answer…. the sun…. enjoy

The film is set in post-nuclear Tokyo in a dimension not so distant from ours. Young salary-man’s morning commute takes a surreal turn.

It is starting to sink in how big the Japan Earthquakes and Tsunamis are…
Hope everyone stays safe.
Japan is such a strong country and thankfully they are the most prepared for these kinds of disasters.  Houses are replaced every 20 years, the Tsunami alert system is state of the art and people actually listen and take things seriously.
The Japanese people will pull themselves through this.  I just wish they didnt have to.
がんばって日本 you are in my heart.

I love the Koshigaya logo…
The emblem was adopted 10 January 1955. Around the outside of the emblem are 10 overlapping incomplete circles, representing the union of 10 towns and villages. Inside that, four katakana ko コ are arranged in a circle, representing koshi 越 (to exceed), the first character of Koshigaya (“shi” may mean four). In the centre of the emblem is a stylised kanji gaya 谷 (valley).
It is a beautifully designed piece and one of my favourite places in japan…
